Late in 2024, I started quietly exploring an idea that felt equal parts exciting and terrifying: partnering with or buying CrossFit Harbor East.

I'd walked through these doors enough times to know something special was already happening here — in the people, the energy, the way strangers became teammates mid-workout. But what I kept coming back to wasn't just the programming or the equipment. It was a feeling. And I wanted to protect it, grow it, and open it up to more people.

So I took a chance on something bigger than myself.

This month, Pride month, I find myself thinking about why that decision mattered so much.

Pride is a reminder that belonging isn't automatic. That for too many people — LGBTQ+ individuals, people in larger bodies, older adults, beginners who've never set foot in a gym — walking through a fitness facility door can feel like entering a space that wasn't built for them. Where the culture is unwelcoming, the programming is inaccessible, or the unspoken message is you have to earn your place here.

That's NOT what we're building at CrossFit Harbor East. Not even close.

Our mission is simple: anyone who walks through our doors should feel welcomed, supported, and celebrated for exactly who they are — on day one, not someday.

No matter your fitness level, age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or the size of the body you showed up in today, you belong here. Full stop. We're not interested in a gym culture built on comparison, judgment, or the idea that fitness is only for a certain kind of person. We believe movement is for every body, and that getting stronger and healthier happens one day at a time, in community, with people who are genuinely rooting for you.

The science backs up why this matters beyond just feeling good. Research consistently shows that social connection, psychological safety, and a sense of belonging are powerful predictors of long-term health outcomes — not just adherence to a fitness program. When people feel truly seen and supported, they show up. And showing up consistently, over years, is what actually changes lives.

That's the CrossFit Harbor East difference we're building toward.

We offer personal training for those who want focused, one-on-one attention. Small group training for those who thrive with a little community but want more individualized coaching. Full CrossFit classes for those ready to push alongside a crew. And nutrition programs, because what happens outside the gym matters just as much as what happens inside it. Whatever your entry point, there's a path for you here.

Pride month is every month in this gym. Not as a marketing moment, but as a lived value. We want our LGBTQ+ members to see themselves in our coaching staff, in our programming, in the way we communicate — and to know this is a place that will have their back. We want every person who has ever felt like fitness wasn't meant for them to walk through our door and feel, maybe for the first time, that it was built exactly for them.

We're not a perfect gym. We're a gym with a clear purpose: to help every member move better, feel stronger, and build the kind of physical resilience that lets you handle whatever life throws at you — and stack the odds in favor of a longer, healthier, happier one.

If this sounds like your kind of place, come find out for yourself.

We'll be here. And we look forwarding to meeting you!
